Introducing Honolulu Chiropractor Dr. Jeffrey Lee

I thought chiropractic was only good for back pain. I had no idea that it could have life-changing effects on things like allergies, asthma or diabetes.

I was 16 years old playing football on the Big Island of Hawaii. One day before practice, we went up to Anna's Pond to go for a swim and I decided to jump from the top of the waterfall. The jump was 65 feet high and I had done it in the past with no problem. This time was different though... When I hit the water I felt a twinge in my lower back. It wasn't painful, it just felt a little off kilter. Nevertheless, it didn't bother me too much so I went straight to football practice.

It was Monday and that meant hitting drills. I weighed about 155 pounds and played defensive end on defense and tight end on offense. In order to toughen us up, our coaches had us hitting with the varsity players who were mostly all over 200 pounds. To make a long story short, I had some lower back pain for the first time in my life after practice that day.

For the following two weeks, I suffered from moderate to severe pain and muscle spasms. The spasms would hit me if I bent or twisted in certain directions and they made breathing very difficult. I was unable to play in the games because of my condition and was scared that my spine would be injured for the rest of my life. At 16 years of age, I thought that I was too young for this.

My father told me that I should go see a chiropractor and so I did. The chiropractor asked me what happened, he examined my spine and then proceeded to adjust my spine. I felt immediate relief following the adjustment, and to my surprise, there were no attacks of muscle spasms as I bent every which way! I couldn't believe how revived I felt and I asked the doctor if he had some kind of magical healing powers. He just laughed, said no, and proceeded to educate me on how chiropractic worked.

In the weeks to follow, I went in for a few follow-up visits and was feeling better than ever. I was back in the game pain free. I also noticed something very remarkable: I realized I was no longer suffering from allergies. Ever since I could remember, I had constantly had a stuffy or runny nose which also contributed to sinus headaches. The allergies hadn't bothered me in three weeks! So I asked the doctor if the chiropractic care could have put an end to the allergies. Once again, he educated me on the connection of the nervous system to the rest of the body and how chiropractic can remove spinal interference and allow the body to function at its optimum. From that point on, I decided that I was going to be a chiropractor!

After graduating high school from Academy of the Pacific in 1997, I moved to Santa Barbara, CA to start my undergraduate studies and experience living away from Hawaii for the first time in my life. After three years of studying hard, having fun, and surfing in the cold water, I was ready to move home. So I came back to Honolulu for a year and a half to finish my undergraduate studies at Chaminade University. Then it was back to mainland for Chiropractic College in the San Francisco area at Life Chiropractic College West. After four years of intensive studies, 18 months of chiropractic internship, national board exams and surfing in even colder water, I was ready to move home and start practice in Honolulu.

I strive to put people in the best physiological state of being that they are capable of. This is achieved by removing any subluxations that may be present within their spine through specific chiropractic adjustments. Optimum health and pain relief are the usual results that follow.

When I'm not at the office adjusting patients, I love going to the beach. Whether it be surfing, windsurfing, diving or barbequing, spending my time by the ocean is one of my favorite things in life. Traveling is also something I love to do -- especially going on surf trips. Fiji, Samoa, Australia, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Mexico and Costa Rica are some of the surf destinations that I have been lucky enough to encounter.

I like to get adjusted at least twice a month just to maintain optimum spinal health. Sometimes I'll get checked more frequently if I've been doing a lot of extracurricular activities. There's no better feeling than being active and having your body operate at its peak potential. To stay in shape, I generally surf or windsurf three or four times a week and train Thai kickboxing twice a week in the evening. I also workout with small weights and an exercise ball once a week. I generally cook healthy food with a lot of spice and enjoy eating a balanced diet. I am definitely partial to natural medicine and stay away from drugs and the knife when at all possible. However, I feel that there are times when the medical model is definitely needed. I have family and friends that have been saved by antibiotics and/or surgery and I am very grateful for our access to modern medicine.

Dr. Dennis Asks some important questions of interest to Honolulu residents - Chiropractor Honolulu Dr. Dennis Asks...

What's the difference between sick care and health care?
Sick care is largely about relieving or suppressing symptoms. Health care is about improving performance. While sick care is about how you feel, health care is about how you function. Sick care is what you do to treat an obvious problem, and health care is what you do to avoid the problem and advance your well-being.
How do most people deal with subluxations?
First, they try to ignore them. When they don't, they go to the medicine cabinet to stop their brain from feeling the symptom. Later, back surgery may be threatened. Sadly, it's not until this later stage that they consult our Honolulu chiropractic office. Yet, even with the delay, most are delighted by the results produced by today's chiropractic care. Contact us and let's get started.
